Nokia Lumia 920 Receiving Post-Portico Update in Canada

Microsoft and Nokia have yet to deploy the promised Windows Phone 8 Portico upgrade to all Lumia 920, and it looks like the smartphone is now receiving another update that improves the phone's features even further.

The folks at WMPoweruser reports the update is only available in Canada for the moment and we're not sure if if meant for Lumia 920 units in other countries as well. According to MonWindowsPhone forums, owners of Lumia 920 devices purchased via Rogers have started to receive another update post-Portico.

This update is said to included quality improvements for languages, though no other details are provided. There's a high chance this update is related to Canadian French language, which is why it might not be available in other countries. Stay info for more info on the matter.

Philips W8355 Coming Soon with Dual-SIM, 5.3-Inch Display and Dual-Core CPU

Although Philips is less known for its smartphones, it appears that the company plans to launch a new Android phone, the W8355.

The main selling points of the smartphone are dual-SIM capability and the large 5.3-inch qHD capacitive touchscreen that displays 960 x 540 pixels resolution. The bad news is Philips W8355 ships with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system out of the box, and is unlikely to receive a Jelly Bean upgrade after launch. According to UnwiredView, Philips W8355 will be launched in China initially, but other regions might get it as well.

It is also worth mentioning the smartphone is powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz, which is complemented by 512MB of RAM. The W8355 sports a 5-megapixel rear photo snapper with autofocus, LED flash and video recording, as well as 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Nokia Lumia 820/920 Now Shipping with Windows Phone 8 Portico

Nokia and Microsoft promised a few months ago an update to Nokia Lumia 820 and 920 will improve some of the phone's features and will fix some of the bugs found in Windows Phone 8.

Dubbed Portico, the first Windows Phone 8 update was rolled out a few weeks ago to Nokia Lumia 920 units in the United States and Canada. The Finnish company announced the rest of the world will receive the Portico update beginning February 2, though we're not sure if it will be launched at the same time in all regions.

However, it appears that Nokia has already decided to ship all Lumia 920 units with Windows Phone 8 out of the box, the folks over at WPCentral claim. Windows Phone 8 Portico adds lots of stability fixes and camera improvements, as well as performance enhancements. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.

Impressive Results of Intel-Powered Lenovo K900 Benchmark

Chinese company unveiled the Lenovo K900 a few days ago at Consumer Electronics Show 2013 (CES), in Las Vegas, but the handset maker did not disclose any details on the phone’s pricing options.

We do know that the K900 will be launched in China sometime in April, but we suspect that the smartphone will be released in other countries soon after. Anyway, until we know more on the handset’s availability, let’s see how it performs in benchmarks. The folks at Tech Authors are among the first to publish some (real?) benchmark results for Lenovo K900. The smartphone scored around 27000 points in AnTuTu, which is about one third better than the most powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processors. The phone was tested running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, though the final version has been confirmed to ship with Android 4.2, which might improve K900’s performance even further.

As PhoneArena notes, the Samsung Galaxy Note II, which packs an Exynos 4412 processor with four cores, scored a bit more above 14000 points. Furthermore, GSM Insider also reports on an interesting benchmark comparison between Lenovo K900 and XiaoMi Phone 2. The results of the K900 are almost similar with the ones published by the folks over at Tech Authors, so even if the scores seem unbelievably high, they must be real. XiaoMi Phone 2 almost reached 22000 points in AnTuTu benchmark, whereas Lenovo K900 exceeded the 25000 milestone. Intel’s Clover Trail+ chipset seems to be extremely powerful in comparison with other SoC’s available on the market these days.

Lenovo K900 is powered by a 2GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2580 processor, which is complemented by a PowerVR SGX 544MP graphics processing unit and 2GB of RAM. The Z2580 packs two core and four threads and is likely to be embedded in other handsets as well.
