Windows 8 Centric Event Will Not Be Preceded by Pre-Sessions

Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8-centric event scheduled approximately a month from now will not start with the usual dose of pre-sessions that participants at the Redmond company’s conferences must already be familiar with. 

Whether it was the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) or TechEd, or a number of additional Microsoft events, pre-sessions were generally a rule, and for the few past months it appeared that BUILD was going to be no exception. 

Announced in June 2011, the BUILD Windows is applauded by Microsoft as the first place to get deep insight into the next major iteration of Windows. 

Until earlier this week, the Redmond company had put pre-sessions on the list for BUILD attendants that were looking to warm up for the event. Pre-sessions were planned for September 12. 

Now it looks like Microsoft is just going to jump right into BUILD, since the pre-sessions have been canceled, as revealed by Mary-Jo Foley. 

“In order to better focus on all the new content that will be covered at BUILD, we decided to optimize for the four main days of the event, which will include an enormous number of speakers and sessions. Registration is open on Monday but there will not be any formal sessions for attendees that day. We’re communicating the change now so people have the option to change their travel arrangements,” reads the official statement from the software giant on the matter. 

This means that while BUILD participants will get to register on September 12, 2011, the first day of the conference will be September 13. 

Of course, with pre-session now canceled, the BUILD keynote will also become the opening moment for the event. The keynote is scheduled for September 13, between 9:00am - 11:00am. 

Personally, I don’t think that scrapping the pre-sessions will have any impact on the Windows 8 BUILD event. What about you?

Intel's Upcoming Core i7 Mobile CPU to Top Out at $1096

By the start of Q4 2011, Intel is expected to release a new series of high-performance mobile Core i7 processors with frequencies as high as 2.7GHz, which are expected to top out at $1096.

These will be the fastest standard voltage mobile Core i7 processors to be based on the Sandy Bridge architecture, as future parts will use the 22nm Ivy Bridge core.

The most powerful CPU to be unveiled is the Core i7-2960XM Extreme Edition. Just like its predecessor, this will include four computing cores with Hyper-Threading support and 8MB of L3 cache, all packed inside a 55W thermal envelope.

However, the base clock speed of the chip will be raised from 2.5GHz to 2.7GHz, while the maximum Turbo Boost frequency will also receive a 200MHz speed bump to reach 3.7GHz.

Right below this processor will come the Core i7-2860QM that has the same 2.5GHz base operating speed as the current Core i7-2920XM, but features a 45W TDP and a 100MHz higher max Turbo frequency.

Next in line is the Core i7-2760QM that is destined to replace the 2720QM. Both of these CPUs feature a quad-core design and 6MB of Level 3 cache memory, but the upcoming chip improves the clock speeds of its predecessor by 200MHz.

Finally, the last Intel mobile SKU to be replaced is the Core i7-2620M, which will surrender its place to the 2640M.

This is the only upcoming Core i7 processor to include only two cores and 4MB of L3 cache, but it also features a smaller 35W TDP.

According to CPU-World, these processors are expected to be released in the second week of September (September 4 to September 10), and prices will range from $346 for the Core i7-2640M to $1096 for the 2960XM.

The two other quad-core chips, the Core i7-2760QM and 2860QM, will carry a MSRP of $378 and $568, respectively.

Windows 7 / 8 vs. OS X vs. Linux vs. Chrome OS – A Numbers Game

It looks like Windows 8 won’t have much of a competition from rival operating systems, both traditional and emerging OSes, since the Windows platform is expected to continue its dominance through this year, and most probably the next few years as well. 

Gartner is forecasting that Microsoft will sell approximately 635 million new Windows 7 PCs worldwide since Windows Vista’s successor was launched. 

This year alone, Windows 7 will be featured on no less than 94% of new computers and will climb to an operating system market share of 42%, dethroning Windows XP as the top OS worldwide. 

In mid-September 2011 the software giant is expected to deliver the first deep dive into Windows 8, and even to share an early development milestone, or perhaps even the Beta, with early adopters for testing. 

Windows 8 will be launched in 2012, and with Windows 7 becoming the top dog on the OS market, is hard to believe that rival platforms will be able to make sufficient inroads in Windows territory to actually matter. 

For example, Gartner expects only 5.2% of all computer shipments in 2015 to be Apple Macs, up from 4.5% in 2011, and 4% in 2010.

"The adoption of Mac PCs and Mac OS is a result of Apple's ability to grow well above the market average in the last 12 to 24 months, thanks to its ease of use from the user interface (UI) point of view and ease of integration with other Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and the existing Apple ecosystem of applications and programs," said Annette Jump, research director at Gartner.

The open source Linux operating system will most likely be affected by a continued stagnation as far as market share evolution is concerned, Gartner opined. 

“Linux OS is expected to remain niche over the next five years with its share below 2 percent because of the remaining high costs of application migration from Windows to Linux. In the consumer market, Linux will be run on less than 1 percent of PCs, as Linux's success with mini-notebooks was short-lived and few mini-notebooks are preloaded with it today,” the company said. 

In addition, it also appears that new operating systems such as those from Google, Chrome OS and Android, or HP’s webOS, are not likely to win over territory from Windows on PCs in the next few years. 

“Gartner does not expect Chrome OS, Android or webOS to get any significant market share on PCs in the next few years. Analysts believe that to get any consideration as an alternative for a traditional PC, lighter OSs will first need to get strong positions on emerging client devices such as Web books and media tablets,” the company added. 

“Even then, it is unlikely that they will have any impact on Microsoft and Windows OS's hold on positions on traditional professional PCs in the time frame of the current forecast. This is because of application compatibility issues and the high proportion of Windows-specific applications within many enterprises.”

Windows 8 NUI GUI Video Almost at 5 Million Views

The first sneak peek video that Microsoft shared of Windows 8, the next major iteration of the Windows client, has been watched almost 5 million times. 

4,979,559 times to me more specific, according to the official count on YouTube at the time of this article. 

Microsoft made the Building "Windows 8" - Video #1 available at the start of June 2011, on the same day it offered the first official preview of Windows 7’s successor to the world. 

Some readers might remember that the video shoot past 2 million views on the first day alone. Since then, the number of views has been growing at a slower pace, but growing nonetheless. 

At just a little over a month, the Building "Windows 8" - Video #1 has been watched 4,97 million times, and it’s bound to cross the 5 million mark soon enough. 

I have included it below, it’s the first video embedded at the bottom of this article, just in case you want to watch it again. 

The second video is a much longer preview of Windows 8 from Computex, Taipei, less popular than the official preview but worth the time it takes to watch it. 

Following the early June 2011 video previews, Microsoft hasn’t offered any additional details about the next major version of Windows. 

Still, BUILD Windows is approximately one month away, and it will be an event focused on Windows 8, as the software giant has stressed repeatedly. 

The fact that BUILD registration was already been closed is another indication that interest for Windows 8 is extremely high. The BUILD conference has been sold out even if Microsoft provided absolutely no details about any sessions, pre-sessions or any type of content to be presented to participants between September 13 and 16 in Anaheim, CA.

Cisco CCNA - CCNP Certification Exam: Cabling Your Home Lab

More CCNA and CCNP candidates than ever before are putting together their own home labs, and there's no better way to learn about Cisco technologies than working with the real thing. Getting the routers and switches is just part of putting together a great CCNA / CCNP home lab, though. You've got to get the right cables to connect the devices, and this is an important part of your education as well. After all, without the right cables, client networks are going to have a hard time working!

For your Cisco home lab, one important cable is the DTE/DCE cable. These cables have two major uses in a home lab. To practice directly connecting Cisco routers via Serial interfaces (an important CCNA skill), you'll need to connect them with a DTE/DCE cable. Second, if you plan on having a Cisco router act as a frame relay switch in your lab, you'll need multiple DTE/DCE cables to do so. (Visit my website's Home Lab Help section for a sample Frame Relay switch configuration.)

If you have multiple switches in your lab, that's great, because you'll be able to get a lot of spanning tree protocol (STP) work in as well as creating Etherchannels. To connect your switches, you'll need crossover cables.

You'll need some straight-through cables as well to connect your routers to the switches.

Finally, if you're lucky enough to have an access server as part of your lab, you'll need an octal cable to connect your AS to the other routers and switches in your lab. The octal cable has one large connector on one end and eight numbered RJ-45 connectors on the other end. The large connector should be attached to the async port on your AS, and the numbered RJ-45 connectors will be connected to the console ports on your other routers and switches.

Choosing and connecting the right cables for your Cisco CCNA / CCNP home lab is a great learning experience, and it's also an important part of your Cisco education. After all, all great networks and home labs all begin at Layer One of the OSI model!

Windows 8 Up to Build 8063.0.110804-1922, Onward to Beta

Windows 8 has yet to reach the Beta development milestone, even though Microsoft is approaching the moment when it will deliver the first deep insight into the next major iteration of its Windows client.

Sources familiar with the evolution of Windows 7’s successor reveal that Windows 8 is still in the Milestone 3 (M3) stage of the development process, the last phase before the platform will graduate to Beta, which has yet to happen.

The few Windows 8 leaks that happened earlier this year have revealed some details about the next version of the operating system, but for the past months the volume of unofficial information and code has dried up.

According to WinBeta, Windows 8 has reached Build 8063.0.110804-1922, still a M3 testing release. As the Build string information reveals, this particular version of Windows 8 was compiled on August 4th, 2011, namely last week.

There are no specific details about any new features, capabilities or functionality in Windows 8 Build 8063.0.110804-1922.

In the past months, Microsoft has opened up more and more on Windows 8, with the first pieces of official info being shared with the public.

In addition to Systems-on-a-Chip / ARM architectures support, the software giant revealed that Windows 8 will be tailored to next generation NUI (natural user interface) form factors and that it will support HTML5 and JavaScript applications natively.

The Redmond company is now gearing up for BUILD, the evolution of the Professional Developers Conference, an event focused on Windows 8, as Microsoft stressed time and again.

The BUILD Windows conference has already been sold out, despite the fact that the software giant did not share any details about the sessions or the content which participants will get access to.

Microsoft is bound to provide the first Windows 8 bits around BUILD, but it’s unclear whether the company will offer a pre-Beta M3 Build, or the fully fledged Beta development milestone.
