In November last year, South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung brought to the market the first smartphone in the world to run under Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, the Galaxy Nexus.
The handset was made available with a TI OMAP 4460 dual-core application processor inside, with each core clocked in at 1.2 GHz. It also packed a PowerVR SGX540 GPU when released.
Galaxy Nexus was launched as the latest Google phone out there, featuring cutting edge technology and impressive capabilities.
However, it seems that there is room for more, and that Samsung and Google are already preparing the release of a new hardware version of the device.
The new handset is reportedly packing Texas Instruments’ OMAP 4470 dual-core processor, which features a PowerVR SGX544 GPU, much more powerful than its predecessor.
The smartphone was not announced as of yet, but it has already made an appearance on the NenaMark benchmark website, which suggests that it might arrive on shelves in the near future.
The benchmarking results show that the handset is capable of great performance levels, and that the chip inside it can be overclocked to as much as 1.8GHz, though it runs only at 1.3GHz in the benchmarking test.
The OMAP4470 processor should arrive in devices in the first half of this year, which means that the Galaxy Nexus flavor packing it is really near.
Rumor has it that this might be the Galaxy Nexus en-route to Sprint. The device was mentioned before CES 2012, with a 1.5GHz application processor inside it, but no other reference to its chipset was made since.
For the time being, it is recommended to take the info on the new version of Galaxy Nexus with a grain of salt. Nothing was made official on it for the time being, and things might not be as rumored now. Keep an eye on this space for more details on the handset.
