Gionee Elife S5.5 Officially Arrives in China on March 18

Mobile phone users in China interested in the purchase of a very slim smartphone before the end of this month are in luck, as Gionee has officially confirmed plans to make its 5.5mm-thin Gionee Elife S5.5 available for purchase in the country starting March 18.

The smartphone, announced with the thinnest body in the world, will be put up for sale in over 40 countries around the world after the initial release in China, the company has also announced. Moreover, the Chinese mobile phone maker has confirmed that a 4G LTE-enabled variant of the device will hit shelves sometime in June. As GizChina notes, users interested in buying the 3G variant of the device will have to pay 2299 Yuan ($374 / €269) for it, which seems more than affordable, considering the specs packed inside it. According to UnwiredView, however, the mobile phone might actually be a bit more expensive in other markets around the world, although Gionee hasn’t offered specific details on the matter as of now. Gionee Elife S5.5 features a 5-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution, while being powered by an octa-core MT6592 processor.

Moreover, the new device arrives on the market with 2GB of RAM inside, as well as with 16GB of internal memory. Unfortunately, the phone’s slim body did not allow for the inclusion of a microSD memory card slot, and users won’t be able to add some extra storage to it. On the back, the slim handset packs a 13-megapixel camera with Sony’s mobile sensor, paired with a 5MP front camera for making video calls while on the go. The fact that it comes with the new MediaTek chipset inside provides Elife S5.5 with support for various network frequencies in China, including TD-SCDMA, WCDMA and GSM. Gionee Elife S5.5 was unveiled with a 2300mAh battery inside, which should ensure at least one day of usage, the company notes. The mobile phone maker has loaded the Gionee Amigo operating system on top of this handset. The platform is based on Android, which means that users will also receive access to a great deal of applications when buying the handset.

We had the chance to play with the smartphone for a bit at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month, and we found it very attractive, especially due to the very slim body and sharp edges. The phone performs very well, and feels impressively snappy, most probably mainly due to its thinness. Considering the price tag it will feature in China, Gionee Elife S5.5 will certainly appeal to a lot of users there.
