Sony Launches NEX-FS700U 4K-Capable Cinema Camera

Sony has completed the development of the NEX-FS700U, known in Europe as the NEX-FS700E, a large-sensor camcorder with Super Slow Motion, among other things.

The NEX-FS700U/E is probably one of the most advanced camcorders of today, and we wouldn't be surprised if we saw it used for shooting Hollywood films.

Granted, in order for it to work well, it will need a compatible Sony recorder and probably a projector too, but we digress.

The newcomer will be capable of shooting video in a resolution of 4K bitstream (total 11.6 million pixels).

We say “will be” because the camcorder won't be able to do it right off the bat. Owners will have to wait for firmware upgrade.

That said, the product relies on a 4K "Exmor" Super 35 CMOS sensor and built-in ND filters, with a newly designed ND filter wheel that rotates across the sensor like a turret.

The wheel positions are Clear, 1/4 (2 Stop), 1/16 (4 Stop), and 1/64 (6 Stop).

Super Slow Motion can be recorded at 120 FPS in 16-second bursts, while 240 FPS are possible in 8-second bursts.

What's more, if film makers are willing to settle for an image quality below 1,080p, 480 FPS and 960 FPS recording is possible as well.

"This camera opens a new door to creative shooting," said Juan Martinez, senior product manager at Sony Electronics' Professional Solutions of America group.

"You can record beautiful high speed full HD movies with the freedom of creative interchangeable lens choice. The NEX-FS700U, with its super slow motion mode, is ideal for promos, TV dramas, commercials and documentaries as well as sports and a variety of event shooting."

The NEX-FS700U (body only) and NEX-FS700UK (with 18-200mm zoom E-mount interchangeable lens) will begin selling in June (2012) at a price of under $10,000 / 7 498 Euro. The price accounts for all the above, as well as 3G HD-SDI / HDMI connectors, the HXR-FMU128 flash memory unit and SD and Memory Stick card support, among other things.
